ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The present book has a long history. Its point of inception was a conference on ESP materials held at SAMT. When the proposal to prepare a textbook based on the findings of research on ESP materials development was approved by SAMT, an extensive research project was prepared with three stages of planning, implementation, and application of findings. This book is, therefore, the outcome of more than 5 years of research on needs analysis of the learners, content analysis of the EAP materials, and task analysis of EFL textbooks and tests of reading comprehension. Therefore, unlike existing books, this book has certain unique features:

1. The content of the book is extracted from the analysis of more than 150 million word corpus collected from authentic published EAP materials.

2. The exercises are based on the most frequent types of tasks in EFL books and EFL tests.

3. The activities are meaningful, directed and designed to help students learn rather than perform certain tasks to fulfill an assignment.

4. The vocabulary is selected from the most frequent words in the corpus, over and beyond the words at high school textbooks.

5. The grammatical elements are selected from the most frequent grammatical points used in EAP books.

This type of task could not certainly be accomplished by a single person. Nearly 100 colleagues and students contributed to the preparation of this book at the planning, implementation, an application levels of the research. Naming all contributors would take up too much space. I cannot thank them in any way, but I would like them to accept a simple but emotionally loaded "thank you".

However, some names I cannot leave unmentioned. First, Dr. S. A. Miremadi, Dr. H. Khanmohammad, Dr. S. S. Marandi, and Dr. R. Akbari who generously helped me at the planning stage. Second, Dr. A. Abednia, Dr. M. Safari, and many young researchers who spent hours on collecting and analyzing data for needs analysis and corpus analysis at the implementation stage of the project.

Third, those who stayed with the project from the first day to the last. Ms. Hoda Harati, and Dr. Kobra Tavassoli who helped me with selecting, adapting, and adopting the texts and preparing the activities for each unit. They also spent a huge amount of time during several stages of revising the early drafts of the text...
